Accortding to Olive
What a dismal day. Grey, damp and cold as my husband Herb’s feet. Then, just when I was about ready to give up and go back to bed (blessedly minus Herb), didn’t he show up at the back door with the last of the sunflowers from the garden.
Well, I guess I’d better trim them up and get them in a vase. Treat them right and they’ll last a good 10 days, maybe more. Don’t believe me? Here are my tips for keeping cut flowers fresh. Try them and see if they don’t work for you.
•Whether they’re from the garden or the florist, keep fresh flowers away from drafts and temperature extremes. So forget putting them on a sunny windowsill and put them someplace cool.
•Flowers don’t like fruit or cigarette smoke either, because of the ethylene gas.
•If they come wrapped in plastic from the florist, remove it as soon as you can, and if they’re arranged in foam oasis, add fresh water every day.
•As the days go by, nip off any dead or wilting leaves and stems as soon as you see them, and when the water gets cloudy, change it! Here’s what you do:
•First, get rid of any dead flowers or stems and lay the good ones to one side.
•Clean the vase well with soapy water and rinse it thoroughly.
•Replace the water and mix in the flower preservative provided by the florist. There are instructions on the packet.
•Now cut the stems at an angle one or two inches from the bottom. Use a sharp knife, not scissors! They’ll mash the stems.
Now put your flowers in the water – and remember to say thank-you to the person who gave them to you, no matter what his faults may be.
It’s official. Montreal Home Magazine loves Bromewood. See their write-up on us in their Autumn 2011 issue. It’s titled Stores We Love – and we love that!
